Be honest: When was the last time you cleaned up obsolete code from your repos?

I just had a chat with a buddy who invested in a startup buying up obsolete code.

The use case is there, Github and other repos contain 10+% of obsolete code which no one ever deletes and it costs a bunch per year for just having it there.

What if you could just licence the code to Anthropic, OpenAI or any other AI lab and make passive income every time its sold.

Does that as a use case make sense for you?

Regularly. And It’s on the team’s calendar. And a moderate amount of checked in code has an expiry date on it, as part of std process

If you want a fancy licence to all my old code to use for whatever, we can talk, but fat lot of good some 15 year old ObjC and Java will do you for finding the other side of a sale. My total revenue for the stock photos I tried licensing back when it was the early days of pro-am photography and we all thought there might be some passive income opportunities for stuff like this, was exactly zero.

According to recent legal cases, the current status seems to be there's no problem training on something so long as you had legal access to that material in the first place, so nobody would want to pay for this. But even if those rules change and they need to licence my code (and other text) to train on it, a lot of LLM's abilities come not from code but from understanding what language means, so the mean human's contribution to these models is necessarily parts per multi-billion, and that includes if we get paid for all the stuff we do while at work and not just on our own time; therefore, even if I got 100% of the revenue, my lifetime's code output might be worth perhaps $50/year even if you train on all the code from all the companies I no longer work for.

This is basically what I'm doing with the existing subscriptions I have. I can't remember the last time I cleaned up obsolete code, my coding agents do it for me now.

		Answering the security question from the page itself, since it's more specific than the thread has gotten: their answer to secrets is "Redact before submitting — strip secrets, keys, or customer data first." It's on the seller. No anonymization or scanning step is described anywhere. That's a harder job than it sounds, because what they're actually buying is git history. Their own proof numbers are 609M tokens of source against 13B of history 95% of the value is the commits. A key that was committed and later removed is gone from the working tree and permanent in the history. Scrubbing a checkout is a grep. Scrubbing history is a rewrite of every repo you submit, and it's the part nobody does correctly under time pressure. Two other things worth reading closely before signing: The hero says licences are non-exclusive. The FAQ says "You grant an exclusive licence to market and sell the codebase to buyers." Both are true and they're different exclusivities — the buyer's licence is non-exclusive, Pangea's right to broker it is not. That second one is what binds you. And the IP line is "only code you hold the rights to," which is carrying a lot of weight given Pangea's main business is a marketplace of 150+ dev agencies. Agency work is usually work-for-hire with IP assigned to the client. For much of that network the licensable set is far smaller than "repos we've shipped," and the page leaves both the determination and the liability with the seller. Small correction to the pricing upthread: $100/M is what the seller is paid, per the page — not what the lab pays. The spread isn't disclosed.

Are you talking about selling source code? Some people like that and some people could buy it on physical media.

A year ago I bought a 14 dot something FreeBSD installation DVD for i386 and x86_64 that also came with a source code DVD for many packages (which I lost unfortunately) from the FreeBSDMall website which has been down for a while so I couldn't order a replacement.

		There are two modes - One of payment for the licence which is usually 10x the multi-licence deal, or its paid once and than every time another company licences it. I think the competition is now for the dev insights, way of work, human touch and trying to teach the agents how to replicate it, and they pay 100 USD per 1m token of code
