| Opposition to energy drinks seems like a moral panic to me. Like I don't see anyone calling for bans on coffee and Irish coffee. |

| It absolutely is. Gambling made legal overnight, exploding into a mega industry? Nah take a look at this scary Red Bull! |

| I could believe the UK might try to ban selling coffee to under 21s too at the current rate, honestly. There's probably at least one study about stunting growth with coffee? |

| ▲ | swores 8 hours ago | parent [-] | | I mean, there's more than enough reasons to criticise or laugh at the UK that actually exist, without mocking a country for a hypothetical of someone online that hasn't actually been proposed by any politicians or, well, anybody at all? | | |
| ▲ | vablings 3 hours ago | parent | next [-] | | It is incredibly annoying at the self-checkout being asked to present PHOTO ID to buy a monster energy. I was once denied my beverage, so I walked back over to the meal deal area and purchased a Starbucks canned coffee that had THE SAME LEVEL OF CAFFIENE | |
| ▲ | strbean 3 hours ago | parent | prev [-] | | And a hypothetical banning that isn't totally unreasonable if you look at it objectively. What other highly addictive cardiotoxic stimulants should we allow to be sold over-the-counter with no age limits whatsoever? |

| Well, are either of those sold in cans and marketed to children? |
| |
| ▲ | yrjrjjrjjtjjr 8 hours ago | parent | next [-] | | Coffee is sold in cans yes. Very popular in Japan. Elsewhere... I think I saw Starbucks cans? Or was it bottles? | |
| ▲ | asdff 8 hours ago | parent | prev [-] | | Anything with any sort of flavor is argued as being sold to children these days. Except bubblegum flavored vodka I guess. Somehow that has always gotten the pass while people handwring over juul pods. | | |
| ▲ | crtasm 8 hours ago | parent [-] | | I'm not sure I follow what you're trying to say - at least here I don't see marketing campaigns for flavored vodka targeting children, and unlike energy drinks it's not on store shelves right next to soft drinks. | | |
| ▲ | asdff 6 hours ago | parent [-] | | I never saw those sorts of ads for juul either. People just incorrectly assumed fruity must be for kids and that no adults would want say a mango pod vs pure tobacco flavor. At the gas station that vodka is in the common shelving as its often the 40 proof stuff like orlov with these flavors. The smirnoff in the grocery store depending on the state could be in the same aisle as the soda. |

| I have had personal health experiences related to them and quit them over twenty years ago before any of this hype. |
