Here’s the discussion about this on HN from a couple days ago:

Ubiquiti launches UniFi OS Server for self-hosting https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=44746603 (300+ comments)

This is a cut down OS to run the UniFi Network app on. The UniFi Network app is the controller that UniFi devices e.g. switches, routers, AP's register to and provides the management capabilities. You can currently run this app on most OS's. I guess this new OS is to reduce the support overhead of running your own controller. Any maybe enable some nice third party custom controller hardware. Also, there are some features you only get when you use one of their cloud hosted controllers which this OS enables for the app anyone can self host. But the big drawback is no adoption of the router/cloud gateways.

Is that all it is? I've been seeing all the hype around UniFi OS here and didn't really understand what the deal was. I was kind of hoping for a sort of managed OS I could control from the UniFi dashboard.

So any of my pcs can now become a router compatible with the UniFi ecosystem?

Not a router, no, but you can run their network controller and hopefully eventually things like the network video recorder (Unifi Protect) for their cameras. That's not included yet though as far as I've seen.

Does anyone know if it does deep packet inspection? https://www.unihosted.com/blog/understanding-unifi-deep-pack...

DPI happens on a UniFi Gateway. That could be the same hardware as the controller when it's a UniFi device like a Dream Machine/Dream Router, but it doesn't have to be. The Gateway will do the DPI and report the numbers to the controller where they are stored and displayed.

So this is basically a new version of the unifi controller software?

More like a distribution that contains the unifi controller and a few other peices.

(i.e. the unifi network controller piece in UniFiOS is the same as the one you deploy yourself)
