It was open-sourced back in 2012, the title is misleading.

> Wheeeen I'm not running CDE, my CPU gets cooold

edit: oh, knowledge of this parody song seems to have fallen off the internet. The only reference I can find is a reddit post from 2009 [0], and its link to sunos.mp3 is dead. umm, here, https://snap.philsnow.io/2026-10-31T14-14-57.bqsytnc0ks4q6ie... ... It's definitely a product of its time, and a tiny time capsule into the zeitgeist of the mid-late 90s.

[0] https://reddit.com/r/science/comments/9ofyg/they_might_be_gi...

and transcribing the words to help the algorithm know it again:

  chorus:
The SunOS is a mass of irritating ass
  A gigantic, closed-source kernel
Where source is built into executables
By a compiler that is difficult to acquire

Yo-ho (?) is hot, but Sun is not
A place where we could code
But on my SPARC, there'd be no life
  Without SunOS to load

We need its shell, we need its prompt
  We need its CDE
But if Java wins, without a doubt,
There'll be no Perl or C

  [chorus]

  The SunOS is sloww
(It is so slow, that it can be outperformed by many other operating systems: Irix, AIX, Linux, and *even* Windows 2000)
  The SunOS is large
(It is so large, that about 86,000 packages come in its standard distribution)
  The SunOS is really old
(About 13 years old, and that's why it looks so crusty)

  When I'm not running CDE
  My CPU gets cold

SunOS gives light, SunOS runs hot,
  SunOS will run on SPARC
The SunOS will trip your UPS
And leave you in the dark

(Hackers have found that SunOS is a huge mess of outdated code.)
(The look and feel of the SunOS are based on acid hallucinations by Kernighan, Ritchie, Thompson, and Stallman)

  [chorus]

  The SunOS, ladies and gentlemen.

Funny that back in the day it was considered a “heavy” on resources desktop but now it’s quite lightweight.

I prefer TCL/Tk Bisque, which had its own command, t-shirt, and cult:

https://wiki.tcl-lang.org/page/tk_bisque

The Tk command tk_bisque, documented in http://www.purl.org/tcl/home/man/tcl8.5/TkCmd/palette.htm is implemented in the Tk library file palette.tcl.

https://wiki.tcl-lang.org/page/bisque

"X11 bisque - also known as 'Ousterhout beige' - was for a long time the default color of Tk GUI's."

The "bisque is beautiful" slogan first appeared on a T-shirt [L1 ] in 1995.

the purl.org link doesn't work anymore. it redirects me to https://tcl.tk/ which is something entirely different. a working link: https://www.tcl-lang.org/man/tcl9.1/TkCmd/palette.html
