I bought Sully Sullenberger's book in early 2012. He's the pilot who perfectly ditched his Airbus A320 in the Hudson River after losing both engines on takeoff to bird strikes.

One of the things from the book was how Sully spent a lot of time investigating other pilots' accidents: 'was there anything that pilot could have done to have survived?' When he got to his own emergency situation over the Hudson, time slowed down and he decided over the course of a few seconds that ditching in the river was their only option.

"One way of looking at this might be that for 42 years, I've been making small, regular deposits in this bank of experience, education and training. And on January 15, the balance was sufficient so that I could make a very large withdrawal." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sully_Sullenberger
