Frankenstein, the first scifi, well first I'm aware of, isn't describing a utopia.

I don't know if it's selection bias, but the unabashedly positive sci fi of the mid 20th century seems to be more of a blip than a pattern.

I think it's selection bias in what we like to remember too. The 50s has huge quantities of post apocalyptic sci-fi for example...
