| It's the USA, you can just ban it. https://public-inspection.federalregister.gov/2026-21447.pdf |

| No, that isn't going to happen. The US can't afford to lose the AI race and US companies that can't compete will get thrown under the bus and replaced with those that can. The DHS order only bans buying DeepSeek products directly (e.g. doing inference on their China hosted servers). It does not apply to open weights at all. And DeepSeek just gave their response to the DHS order. |

| ▲ | metalspot 34 minutes ago | parent [-] | | "DeepSeek implementation" in this context means a third-party product that uses a DeepSeek product, e.g. the DeepSeek API. This does not apply to open data running on a non-affiliated third-party inference provider. |

| ▲ | metalspot 32 minutes ago | parent [-] | | No, it is being interpreted that way by people who either don't understand basic legal writing and the legal standards for an order of this nature, or by people [who] are purposefully FUD'ing in order to take advantage of that lack of specialist knowledge. |

| Yeah, but they can't ban the rest of the world from using it :) |

| ▲ | pluc 3 hours ago | parent [-] | | You could claim you're the more ethical of the two countries and hope people boycott it ahahahah | | |
| ▲ | vintermann 3 hours ago | parent | next [-] | | That works. But make sure you don't say it outright because that might make people stop and think about it for a moment. | |
| ▲ | inknight 3 hours ago | parent | prev | next [-] | | That's right, they could | |

| Isn’t this a ban on it being used by the state, rather than people/civilians? |
