I stared self hosting in 2020 when Raspberry Pis were super cheap (not anymore :( ) and lots of things started becoming available in Docker. Haven't ever considered going back to the cloud. I love taking back full control.

At least RPi stock has stabilized a bit... I first started hosting on secondhand hardware, but switched over to RPis since they drew less power. Then I think more importantly in the event of a hardware issue: it's much easier to simply swap out the SD card into a replacement.

Same, Covid was a great time to spend shifting things from clouds to home. I have a small fleet of Pi4's and 1 newer 5 (for running Omada locally). Cost has shifted from subscriptions ($$$) to maintenance (time) :)
