I think people vastly underestimate the ability of human to respect human performance despite being inferior to machines. Think about chess players vs stockfish, marathon runners vs a car, etc. I think the crux is much more prosaic, as buried in the article. > I also don’t want to lose my job to a tangle of GPUs. To put a GPTism, it’s not about the knowledge or status, it’s more about keeping their job and money. And that can only be answered by policies, and imo by UBI. So votes if you can people, protest otherwise, discuss, debate, lobby with your friends, families acquitances.

Jobs and money are bottom of pyramid needs. If we answer those with UBI I guarantee you status and purpose are the next ones. Chess players vs stockfish isn't a good comparison because chess fans only care about the performance of maybe the top-50 players. People may gain and be satisfied among their own peer groups. All good and healthy if that peer group is your local badminton club or knitting circle - something where effort and skill have rewards and people can make objective, tangible progress. But groups not oriented around such activities could turn even more toxic.
