Becasue they are making much more than $1 per month on selling targetted ads using your highly personalised and accurate ad profile.

They're not targeted. I actually searched around the app settings looking for an option to enable targeted ads. If I'm forced to see ads, I'd much rather see ads for things I might actually care about.
