Biometrics is my main concern around this, and in that the government can compel you to provide them for device unlock, unlike a pin or password.

Until we change our laws in the US on this front, I will continue to use passwords and hardware keys separate from my phone box.

Just don't setup biometric authentication on your device, then? You don't have to use FaceID to unlock passkeys in iOS for example

▲NoidFonsense a day ago | parent | next [-]

you will eventually be compelled to, which is enabled by attestation

Well, at that point I'll figure out what to do. I can't live my life constantly working around bad design that doesn't actually exist yet

▲hedora a day ago | parent [-]

This attitude is the reason design keeps getting more and more user hostile over time.

I cannot possibly game out all future adverse design choices that a vendor may make. Today, October 14th 2026, Passkeys offer more upsides to me than they do downsides, so I use them

If a particular app vendor or website changes how they accept or use Passkeys, then I won't use them for that app or site. If my computing platform vendor(s) make it harder or worse to use Passkeys then I'll bail out

There's a lot of what-ifs in every decision, and I cannot possibly nor would I want to, figure out 82 steps ahead in 4-D chess how company X may try to screw me over

There wasn't any 4D chess to play with TOTP, SSH keys, or passwords.

You don't have to do game out all solutions, no one can. We game them out as a group and share our perspectives, as we are here today, and then take more time to reflect on what others have said, eventually returning to iterate with refined understandings, and we will each make our own more informed choices, not always the same.

if you don't setup biometrics be ready to provide mfa which is inconvenient every 30 mins....

▲psanford a day ago | parent | prev | next [-]

There is nothing about passkeys that requires biometrics. Synced passkeys on android will work with your screen unlock code if you do not have biometrics enabled. Same with passkeys stored in a password manager. Same with hardware passkeys that do not support biometrics.

▲verdverm a day ago | parent [-]

every time I've been prompted for passkey setup, it says things like "this is easier, just give your fingerprint"

no thanks, passwords are not a burden to me

▲psanford 4 hours ago | parent [-]

I don't ever see that

▲mahboi 3 hours ago | parent [-]

It's a thing, but mainly because they assume you're using a smartphone with fingerprint enabled.

What makes you think the government can’t compel you to provide a password?
