Part of the ambition is to increase balancing services (such as battery storage) to reduce the reliance on big always-on generators or fossil-fuel-powered suppliers and increase the ability to leverage variable-output renewables like wind and solar.

One of the key challenges is electricity distribution, with a number of key transmission bottlenecks: a notable one is Scotland/England, where Scotland renewables generate more power than necessary, but not all of it can be exported to England as their isn't enough capacity across that transmission section.

Transmission capacity growth is now the key priority for the grid, with policies and plans optimised to address the bottlenecks in distribution.
