| That's standard POSIX. Tilde expands when at the beginning of an unquoted word. Pretty straightforward. ~ or ~/ --> $HOME
~user --> user's home
---Bash has a few extra. ~+ --> $PWD
~- --> $OLDPWD
~+N or ~-N --> dirs
