I'm curious why is there a ring around earth - is that kind of a default position that a bunch of them automatically get given if there isn't more specificity in the data?

It's the geostationary belt, about 36,000 km up, where satellites stay over one spot on the equator. It's real, only the dots are much bigger than the satellites.
