NATO/ the west is in a proxy war with Russia: that's why it takes so long.

Anyway. Now the reality get clear. Russia is winning. The break away regions/oblasts (that followed a similar path to how Kosovo was broken off of Serbia by the west) are almost under Russian control. And let's see where it goes from there.
