Why aren't they installing larger batteries at substations instead? That seems like the economically optimal middle ground.

If home owners are paying then it might be less efficient for the overall economy but better for the utility company. It is often easier to find a million people willing to spend a thousand dollars than finding one person willing to spend a billion.

They already have substations, I assume? You can buy grid-scale batteries in a rolling container and just park them.

		Right, but people are spending for resilience anyway in places like Vermont, it's a way to harvest that money.
