Money. In the 70s, a single income family could afford to host. Who has money for that these days?

The period in my life when I hosted parties was when I was a mostly broke college student and flatsharing (you can get a surprising mileage out of cheap Sangria and snacks).

For most people posting on HN, I would guess, money would not be even in the top-3 of reasons.
