It’s so annoying that the EU is artificially hampering EV adoption to protect their outdated fossil fuel car manufacturers.

There are also fleet emmission fines for ICEs so it's not so bad (and very expensive fuel too). Otoh you need buy-in from the population, so making domestic EVs more attractive than foreign ones is one of the better ways to do that.
