Software engineer isn’t a great job anymore and the practice won’t be exciting or lucrative in and of itself ever again. So, who are you in this world? Who will you be and what will you offer? Disallowed answers: Gardening

I think the role of SWE will change (in some areas faster than others) but we still have a few years to think about it. In the meantime, I do think taste, experience, and product sense are still very much a human job, and will remain so for some time (whether it's for other humans, or for machines). The truth is, as long as SWE remains a high-paying and reasonably fun job, I don't see why folks would consider something else.

Lawyer. Sitting back smiling. The nerds are having their day of revenge, but it won’t last. When they begin offending the sensibilities of the professional classes, the professional classes will pass laws. Judgment, is our currency. A coin the techbro community distinctly lacks.
