Thats part of the premise, we don't need to invent new technologies when email/rss are already self curated / federated.

The missing piece is discovery.

Which is why in addition to allowing you to aggregate internal/external feeds into one place, each instance also shares each external feed its users have subscribed too, and each user can share who they read (like a blog roll).
