This website has been full of people that say it's better than journalism, so I don't think you're really capturing the entirety of the dynamic

Journalism is one particular way of trying to learn about the world. Academics are another, the scientific method is a third, and so on.

Claiming that something is a better way to learn about the world is NOT the same as claiming it is using a specific method, or part of a specific tradition.
