Seems a bit hypocritical though: Yes, operating one does not need electricity, but I don't see how you'd build one (or just produce the required quantities of butane and ammonia) without modern industrial equipment and electricity.

Many Amish will ride in your car if you’re going into town, as one example. Similar to Sabbath-keeping Jews are allowed to have Gentiles do $TASK (not recalling offhand what that might be). Regardless, to think it hypocritical is to perhaps misunderstand the reasoning, in the case of the Amish. As I understand it, it’s not avoidance of technology, but avoidance of relying on technology. Thus opportunistic car rides in the neighbor’s car, or using a fridge someone else built as long as it runs on propane (which isn’t extracted with horses and buggies, either).

Anyway, I don’t speak for any Amish, but I have lived around them and take that FWIW.
