A similar story that came out around the time of the “Gulf of America“ debacle basically just said that the database they use for naming bodies of water had been updated, and therefore that carried through to Maps. So it wasn’t really a decision one way or the other, it was a continuation of an existing policy of where names come from. | ||||||||||||||||||||

Always funny to me how people expected Google to do anything else other than roll over. Should be a lesson to the dems next term, either extort the tech giants, the mere threat of the government taking action against Google makes them jump on these dumb name changes. Otherwise, get them on their side to change the law to prevent this kind of shit show ever again. Eh...Fury? Here in Canada, no one cares. This 400+ year old name for a lake has not changed, and the tantrum of that pants-shitting worldwide embarrassment changes nothing.
