I think any discussion on this topic should begin with answering "Why would one expect smart people to be happier?"

I think the essay does a really good job of examining that question, and concludes that you shouldn't. It does, however, start off by explaining why people tend to think that it should.

It’s even worse, the opposite is actually true (but it’s a slight effect).
