Just a note that plagiarism wasn't the extent of the alleged misconduct. Large parts of his biography were in question as well. A recovery of his reputation or a long-term future as a public thinker, let alone an academic, was probably not even a remote possibility. The stress of dealing with that situation had to have been incredible.
