n=1. Consumers are under stress with car payments at $500-$1000/month and credit cards maxed out. I have no doubt folks like you will keep your car to the end (as long as you can afford it), but in the aggregate, high fuel prices will destroy demand for combustion vehicles simply out of the total cost of ownership economics as it relates to fuel costs.

You can see this today in the recent increase in used EV sales prices and gas guzzler repo rates over the last 90-120 days.

> The high monthly car payments — coupled with other changes in her household budget, including higher rent — caused Dickerson to fall deep into debt. “Now I’m relying on the credit cards to live, to pay for things that I can’t pay now,” she said. “Food and stuff you need — the electric bill, phone bill. You think you’ll be able to pay them off next month and then you can’t.” Record-high car prices coupled with high interest rates are leading to huge monthly car payments for many Americans. A record share of Americans — more than 20% — agreed to pay more than $1,000 per month for a new car loan at the end of the year, according to car sales site Edmunds. High monthly car payments are putting tremendous stress on household budgets already struggling to deal with a higher cost of living. But many Americans need a car for everyday use, like commuting to work and grocery shopping.

Go out on the interstate, or even the parkways and byways of your city. Fuel may be more expensive than it has ever been, but it still isn’t expensive enough to change behavior. You can see it with your own eyes.

Gas Prices and Consumer Behavior in the United States - https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=6703058 - May 3rd, 2026

> This paper looks at how changes in gasoline prices affect consumer behavior in the United States. Using data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration from 2020 to 2023, this study applies economic concepts like supply and demand, price elasticity, and consumer choice. The results show that even when gas prices increase, people still continue to buy gasoline in the short run because they depend on it. However, over time, consumers begin to adjust their behavior by changing how much they drive or switching to more fuel-efficient options. Overall, this paper shows how basic economic concepts can help explain real-life decisions and how people respond to rising costs.

> Record-high U.S. gasoline prices are changing consumer behavior, with more Americans using public transit, cutting driving, and reducing household spending.

> “If the Strait doesn't re-open soon, I believe we could see the national average price of gasoline reaching $5/gal as early as sometime in June,” GasBuddy’s De Haan said last week.

> Respondents in an ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos poll at the end of April said they are changing their behaviors because of higher gas prices.

> Over 4 in 10, or 44%, have cut back on driving, while 42% have cut other household expenses because of high gas prices. Fewer, 34%, say they have changed travel or vacation plans, while 15% have considered buying an electric vehicle, the poll showed.
