I have seen the local library put non-rare books on the sidewalk for free, only to send unclaimed ones to the landfill. I will never donate a book to a library.

OTOH, I find that books scanned by IA use a compromise exposure setting in which halftones are passable but text ends up on a muddy gray background. I usually make an excruciatingly slow process of exporting a book through a darkening quartz filter in Preview.app,and then a second, thresholding pass.

If there are only a few halftones, swapping pages in the app's contact sheet view.

I don't have a free or inexpensive pdf processor that can recognize pages or areas and adjust accordingly, and have made suggestions to posters here who have shown off online pdf tools (and forgotten who they are).

I won't subscribe to any service, worrying that it will take a legal team to unsubscribe, having read some horror stories, and in any event, uploads using a cheap ISP are deliberately throttled. "you need to upgrade to gold and platinum service"

If anyone has solutions, say so. I am downsizing and could flood any Little Free Library project, and one that I contacted has not replied.

Apparently, even the present is very unevenly distributed. Especially when one lives in the boondocks.
