In order to make life fair, it is necessary to hammer everyone down to the lowest common denominator.

I think the idea is simply to give everyone the same opportunity. "Fairness" then rests with them.

		"The same opportunity" is just as unworkable, as everyone is in a different situation. For example, there never was any path for me to be a basketball player or a weightlifter. People are different, and that's a good thing. What we can do is apply the law equally to people.
