It's spelled lead, and it has been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt to cause brain damage. There is no safe level of lead exposure, it causes neurological damage at any level of exposure and it stays in your body permanently.

I never claimed lead does not cause damage, it does. I dispute it is the primary fault in bad politics, and I offered an alternative theory.
