It will be interesting to see the uptick in stars if any.

The real gold in this thread however is the link to https://github.com/zloirock/core-js/blob/master/docs/2023-02...

Seriously, it's a wild (and heart-breaking) story about js-core maintainer adding a similar line for funding, receiving many hateful answers, while in debt and even going to prison, then not being able to leaveRussia, just for the sake of continuing to maitain his FOSS lib.

I've posted it as a separate entry because it definitely needs more visibility.

The thing about the two women crawling on the road at night is the stuff of nightmares. I once saw two women - a mother and daughter - drunkenly rolling on the road at a major junction late at night. There was no way on earth a driver coming the other way would have seen them. I had to get out of my vehicle, run across and pull them out of the road. You can imagine their delight and gratitude /s. It was truly scary.

idk, this kind of thing is a "what if everyone did it?" kind of thing. It just results in the whole channel turning to noise. But then I have developed pretty significant banner blindness despite using adblock such that attempts to grab my attention will often result in being completely ignored.

I'm okay with this. Seems like they are going about it responsibly enough. Really don't understand the vitriol behind the response near the end either.

I would prefer it if there were more things like this. Or a randomly chosen line from a set for example.

I would argue that it shouldn't say "10k stars" tweak the verbiate to simply state: "Support MariaDB with a simple gesture by starring the project on GitHub at https://github.com/MariaDB/Server"

Edit: They finalized on something more generic it seems.

Is there a particular reason why they're looking for Github stars?

tossitawayplz 9 hours ago | parent [-]

Also wondering, maybe they're just trying to get more publicity in general?

Do github stars really mean much anymore anyway?

RobotCaleb 9 hours ago | parent [-]

Never did

What's the point of such a famous database getting more stars on GitHub? Maybe my perspective is different but to me MariaDB is the default choice of relational DB after PostgreSQL

giancarlostoro 12 hours ago | parent | next [-]

Kind of agree, though using MariaDB is infinitely easier on Windows than Postgres.

fhn 12 hours ago | parent [-]

Care to expand on this so perhaps Postgres people can attempt to make it better?

snapetom 11 hours ago | parent [-]

I've always hated how Postgres merged users, groups, and roles. Users and roles are different in Maria and last I checked, all three are different in Oracle.

I can see how Postgre's evolved that way out of history, when MySQL was thought of as a toy DB. It seems like they added features as a reactionary action then merged them to simplify and now we have three things that are essentially the same. It leads to confusion organization by organization.

It was picked as the KPI for someone responsible for community / communications?

I'm not a DBA or sysadmin, but naïvely I feel like there's a difference between adding it to the client prompt and adding it to the server log. One-time startup messages in prompts/REPLs/etc. are noise (most of the time) anyway, but I feel like I'd expect logs to only contain things actually relevant to the operation of the software. Curious if anyone else feels this way.

(2025)

LorenDB 13 hours ago | parent [-]

More precisely, originally submitted in 2025 but wasn't merged until this year

pseudosavant 12 hours ago | parent [-]

Merged 6 months ago. This hardly seems newsworthy, even if it was at the time it was being merged. `enshittification` being thrown around for a single console line on a piece of software you probably aren't paying for seems like a supremely entitled free loading response.

wavemode 10 hours ago | parent | prev | next [-]

I see nothing wrong with this, neither in principle nor in practice. Also, this was merged over 6 months ago without incident. What is the purpose of this HN submission?

Magicrafter13 10 hours ago | parent | prev | next [-]

People are getting so pissy over this haha. What a nothingburger.

This is a cute little harmless logging line.

I'm going to assume all the noisy dissenters are MySQL maintainers, because that head-canon is much funnier.

hiAndrewQuinn 13 hours ago | parent | prev [-]

Really, they should have merged this into some competing database for optimal marketing, like MongoDB. This is kind of like if you bought an Adidas sneaker and it said Adidas on it, like, yeah. I know.

adzm 13 hours ago | parent | next [-]

Don't all adidas sneakers have the three line design on them?

slowcache 9 hours ago | parent | prev [-]

Lmao totally, like imagine if every car had the logo of who made it on it
