Back in the 90's, one of my professors had such software on Solaris.

The experience was just like using Word, but with LaTeX.

Unfortunately not the kind of stuff the vi and emacs folks care about.

Although LyX comes close.

Was it BaKoMa TeX [0] perhaps?
