Establishment Dems looking at the GOP's plummeting approval rating and looking for ways to sink their own numbers, faster. Like cutting your own brake lines after you watched your opponent drive off the cliff in front of you. --- Also baffling: why the hell would you take a manifestly unpopular thing, image wise, and try to make your own version of it, but liberal-er?

From what I can tell, disgracefully, progressive politicians all around the world support age verification and internet restrictions just as much as conservatives. Often for different reasons, and in good faith, but yeah. I think a lot could be convinced to change idea, though, if spoken to directly.

Democrats as a rule run against the foil of the Republican party. And the majority of supporters seem to think that this is completely acceptable. The best strategy they could come up with is, "just vote blue", which is just pathetically hilarious when you think about it. Almost as if to say, "look, it doesn't even matter what our policies are, the other policies are so bad that you just vote for us." So it's not surprising. Democrats policies are the rainbow Raytheon logo during pride month.
