I'm a systems programmer and I am happier the lower in the stack I am. The narrative of my career is one of going deeper into the infrastructure, deeper into the stuff that other people get to build on top of. I most recently spent a couple of years on the async Rust dataplane at Cloudflare, working on an L3/L4 software router. I write Rust by preference now, but I've shipped a lot of C and C++ down at the layer where you have to care about NUMA, syscalls, and where every packet goes.
