I spent some summers in a village with IIRC ≈200 people, where everyone knew everything about everyone. that friendly older guy? did 10 years for armed robbery when he was young. that pretty girl? a slut who's been had by half the guys in there. the bus driver? beats his wife. the local mechanic? beats his kids. your neighbor? an alcoholic. your other neighbor? ditto. the other one? ditto! I much prefer the city, where I don't even know the names of my neighbors. "the isolation of modern life" might seem depressing 5% of the time, but 95% of the time, it is actually really fucking great. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
