Exactly. I run my own Gitea server, but put my stuff on Github, because that's where the people are. Self-hosting an MP3 is not the same as being on Spotify.

I keep my open source work on github for similar reasons. I don't expect nor want to deal with contributors having to create accounts on a self-hosted forge for every individual project they work on.
