It's physically impossible for land that small to grow enough food to provide for their population. Those people were driven from their land and forced into an incredibly tiny and unsustainable space. And the whole "They never built a society from it" thing is what the most extreme racists and slave traffickers said about Africans so they could justify their treatment of them.
