What is it you like about programming? If you get to the root of what you enjoy about it, there are likely many seemingly unrelated careers that can scratch that same itch. It would also free up programming to become a fun hobby again, or something you just did to elevate your work, rather than the core job. Is moving to an area with more jobs a possibility on the table? Also keep in mind that pay is relative to where you live. While some hit the jackpot making Silicon Valley wages in developing counties with very low costs of living, that’s not the norm and shouldn’t be the expectation. Those wages are high, in part, because the cost of living is high. I work for a large company and pay scales are region dependent to account for cost of living. I think the idea being that two people doing the same job have a relatively similar lifestyle. Are you turning down otherwise good opportunities because you’re looking to make California wages outside of California and the US? |
