Thinking out loud: The emissions are extremely weak. And so it COULD be epiphenomenal... but even as a side effect, the mechanism is still biochemically meaningful. I don't want to suggest consciousness or "life force" activity (Occam's razor suggests biochemical activity), but nonetheless, this opens up the need for deeper mechanistic understandings.
