I get that the article is talking about the contents of art museums and I'm just being pedantic. However, most of the art that I see (including all the art in my own home) was made by artists that I know or have at least met. I'm quite confident that most of the art I see is genuine.

If art in art museums tends to be replicas (the article itself indicates that it mostly isn't), that really does reduce the desire to bother going to see it. The thrill of seeing historically important pieces is being in the presence of the actual item the artist touched. If that's not what's happening, then I may as well just stay home and look at pictures of it instead.
