So many people here don't understand cheating in online games. J_McQuade says it's a "social problem" and not a "technical problem". But that's misunderstanding the discussion so far. Nobody is saying it's a technical problem. Anticheat is a technical TOOL that is used by HUMANS to solve the social problem. People get BANNED by HUMANS based on anti-cheat detecting cheats. That human logic is then crystalized into an AI algorithm that catches the most obvious cheaters.

It strikes me that, maybe the problem is "anti-cheat" is a misnomer. It's really more like "cheat-detection".

bob1029 says it's sufficient to "make it feel like no one is cheating" and to do that you "don't need kernel drivers".

Well, I'm glad for bob1029 that they are so blind that they don't "feel" like the game is being hacked in games that don't have anti-cheat (or some hypothetical anti-cheat that doesn't use a rootkit, I wish bob1029 would elaborate because I haven't seen one yet!). But many of us have higher perception levels and wouldn't be able to ignore the cheaters.
