I dropped in/out of a series of Comp Sci / Info Tech degrees (due to mental health challenges + undiagnosed ADHD) before getting a job in frontline ISP support in my mid twenties. After I got that job I decided to take a break from trying and failing to force myself through a degree and focus on doing well at work. Over five or so years I worked up at the same company from frontline support to corporate/government support (mostly configuring/troubleshooting Cisco stuff) before finally landing in a speciality gov support sys admin role. Spent a couple of years doIng that before I was recruited into a FAANG, did some cloud operations work for a while, started working on some away team dev work which eventually turned into a full time SDE role. Been doing that for a few years now. Still haven't found any reason to go back and finish my degree. |
