the intertwining of entertainment or fun with learning is a problem because it teaches kids that if something isn't fun it isn't for them, the "infotainment science" genre that's very common these days I suspect is detrimental to people pursuing STEM the moment they encounter what those disciplines are like. Neil Postman used to make this point about TV politics and children's TV. Because TV as a medium must be show business, people were taught that if it isn't show business it isn't politics. When kids got spelling lessons on Sesame Street they weren't taught to learn languages but learning how to watch TV. |
