While I am not interested in the style of the compounded essay, Lewis Lapham was a terrific essayist, and having a link to so much of his work in one place is worth a bookmark on its own. Lapham's Quarterly was a joy to purchase and flip through. | ||||||||

Somehow I missed his passing last year. Harper's was very important to me as a teenager stuck in the cultural wasteland of suburbia. Smart, critical, and often funny, it showed me writing didn't have to suck.
