A lot of newer dishwashers have longer cycles to reduce water usage (and I presume get government environmental certifications like EPA Energy Star?). More soak time means less water needed. My dishwasher's "normal" cycle is 3 hours, but it has a quick cycle that runs in an hour and does about as good of a job with marginally higher water and energy use. We mostly use the quick cycle. | ||||||||

My generic GE dishwasher defaults to a few hours, it feels closer to 4h than 2h. There is also an overnight mode that seems to take almost 8h. And then a quick wash mode that takes 1h. | ||||||||
