There was one ruling that was a lot more harsh but wound up getting overturned on appeal. On June 7, 2000, the District Court ordered a breakup of Microsoft as its remedy. According to that judgment, Microsoft would have to be split into two separate units, one to produce the operating system and one to produce other software components. I suspect this will happen here. We seem to be a long ways off from an actual enforcement. I also assume part of this sudden and intense recommendation is in part due to the upcoming change in power. While the case has been going on for a while, this admittedly feels like an ill-timed overreaction. |
